这是「慢活」这本书序言里的第一句话。从慢食概念延伸而来的慢活，是一种在充满速度感的现代社会里所发起的减速运动。它向各种形式的速度崇拜宣战，抵抗速度的奴役。
甚少曝光住宅案的设计师林马克(MarkLintott)，为了这个住宅案，执行过程一共持续了三年。它的坪数不大，是台湾中南部经常可以瞧见的透天厝型态，但它却是一个不折不扣、由慢工细活所打造的空间。它展现了质重于量的特质，进而与人、与生活、与工作、与一切建立真实而有意义的接触。当然最后的结果也是一种无须赘言的设计体现，甚至是设计与施工两者结合的完美示范。
对设计师而言，一个住宅案不就迅速效率的施作完成，让业主快快入住，便划上句点，结案!究竟是什么原因让双方愿意如此费时地将空间的探索，从「形而下」提升至「形而上」，而后，再将一切企图藉由空间传达的概念，精练地诉诸具体形式的再现，再次藉由熟悉的材质重新布局。如同「慢活」的概念，这样的来回翻转，虽然时光流逝，却换来迥然不同的空间质地与层次。「慢磨」的结果，让空间饶富阅读性，而人们也再次因体验空间本质而唤醒深层的感动。
林马克强调，住宅空间涵概许多极为复杂的细节与机能，不是设计师个人的表现场域。设计者更不能逾越本份而忽略了住宅空间的「主体性」。因此，林马克一改玩弄灯光与材质的表现手法，一切回归自然真实的原点，仔细拿捏使用者需求以及机能之间的平衡。透过参与式设计、彼此的沟通，设计者化身为成就业主品味的推手，透过设计连结业主的生活轨迹，从中给予业主所要的。
由于业主是合作过的工程厂商，也是此案的施工单位，于是，此案便在得天独厚的充沛资源条件下，可以从空间角度深化到材质肌理的探触，严谨细腻的施工、精挑细选的材料纹理，最后得以成就设计本身。只稍在空间中稍许停留，你仿佛能感受到时间在空间里的流动，而思绪更如同杜绝了外界喧扰般的宁静非常。透过缓慢，空间找寻到生活的平衡，而你也能以极为舒适放松的自处姿态、一种更好的生活方式，尽情享受属于你的生活点滴。采访」周巽莉

MarkLintottnevereasilydisplayshisresidentialdesigns.Thisnormalsizedhousedesignwitnessedhisdevotionandhasatremendousqualityoflivingspacedesign.Butitisunthinkablethathehasspentthreeyearsonit.ThishousestandsinsouthernTaiwanandistypicalofthelandscapeyetthisoneisdifferentinbothqualityanddesign.Threeyear'shardworkyieldsnotjustastructurebutanattitudeofthequalityoflife.ForMarkandhisclient,theyallappreciatethisprocessofwork–fromrealizingthevalueoftheworktotheperfectcompletionofthedesigntothecarefulmonitoringofthelaborontheconstructionsite.
Foratypicaldesigner,adesignprojectisjustajobthatincludesbudgetandtimecontrolsanddesignersarepushedhardtofinishtheprojectatthefastestspeed.Thatanyoneiswillingtospendtimetoquestiontheideaofdesignandevenlookatthevalueofspaceisreallyunthinkable.ThisprojectisuniqueinthatbothMarkandhisclientbelievedthattheyhadtoreducetheirspeedinboththinkingandmaking.Onlycarefuldesignideaswouldenhancequalityofdesignandawakeanypotentialvalueofthedesign.Anysurfaceandvisiblematerialhadtorevealthedeepestinvisiblespirituality.
Markemphasizesthatalivingspaceisnotashowroomdesign;itechoesthedeepestemotionofitsdwellerandcontainsmanysolutionstointriguingproblemsfromfunctiontodetectingtheirpsyche.Aresidenceisadesignthatshouldneverabandontheessencethatlinkstotheideaof“tobedwelled”.Mark'snightclubtactics,famousforstyle,couldnotberepeatedheresohefixedonsolvingbasicproblemofliving.Mutualrelianceandconstantdialoguebetweentheclientandhimselfeventuallycreatedaconsciousunderstanding,andthisslowprocessishowtheresidencetakesshape.
TheclientworkedwithMarkinpreviouslyandheevenresponsiblefortheconstructionofhisownhouse.Thisunprecedentedcooperationamongdesigner,builderandclientisanadvantageassuringaperfectoutcome.Well-builtwithprecisedetailingisawitnesstothissuccessfulprocess.Asforthedesign,itsspaceisanexperienceofsubtledelight,fullofnothingbuttranquility.Itislikeatightchamberrejectingtheclamoroftheexteriorworld.Everythingseemstobefrozenintimeandspeed,soslowthatthefreshbodyseemstolosemomentumbutreliesonlyoninstincttolive.
